John Hoh
The Senior Editor of BookIdeas is John L. Hoh, Jr. John is a technical writer who in 2008 left the lucrative field of medical devices (where he wrote manuals and training materials on MRIs, x-rays, interventional cardiology (stents and grafts and angioplasty), patient monitors, and HIS/RIS systems) and entered the field of avionics with Astronautics Corporation of America in Milwaukee, WI. John has gone from “brain surgery” to “rocket science.”
Born on 27 January 1963 in Appleton, WI, John attended grammar school and church at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church & School (WELS) and high school at Fox Valley Lutheran High School in Appleton. (Two years—Kindergarten and first grade—were spent in the Daniel Huntley Public School in Appleton.) John matriculated at Northwestern College, Watertown, WI (now part of Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota) in 1981 and graduated in 1986. The following fall he matriculated at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, WI, (of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod) and in 1992 at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Seminary, Mankato, MN, (of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod). While John didn't graduate or receive his Masters' (M. Div.), he is only three credits and a paper shy of that accomplishment. (One would think if the schools won't grant a degree they'd have the decency to refund the tuition, no?)
John attends worship at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS) on Milwaukee's eastside.
John worked as a Technical Writer at Marquette Medical Systems in Milwaukee. Marquette was bought by GE Medical Systems (GEMS). After a layoff at GEMS John wrote operator manuals, service manuals, sell sheets, and instructions for use (IFUs) at Criticare Systems, Inc., which made patient monitors, anesthesia equipment, and MRI monitors. John also managed the translation efforts for operator manuals, IFUs, software, and product labels. He was labeled “Manager of Customer Documentation.” The title was loftier than the pay. After a layoff from Criticare John found himself back at GE Healthcare in a series of contract writing positions where he assisted in the creation of the Interventional Cardiology Virtual Academy for training new sales people, writing work instructions for the IT department, and service manuals for x-ray and MRI machines.
Before that John worked as a Technical Writer at Best Power in Necedah, WI and lived in Mauston, WI, and attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church (WELS), was involved with the Mighty Carlson Art Players (M.C.A.P.), the local community theater group, and wrote a weekly column in The Wisconsin Reminder entitled "Wisdom." John also wrote technical manuals for C. G. Bretting in Ashland, WI, a maker of napkin folders.
John has written numerous articles for newspapers and magazines, including a number of on-line magazines such as HOWS Magazine, ArenaFan, and Suite 101.com, in addition to his long-time duties with BookIdeas.com.
John also has written over a dozen books. Some have been graciously reviewed by BookIdeas staff. See John's website for more about his books under his CheddarBrau and HoneyMilk imprints. These books include John's love for his faith, his interest in aviation history and the Underground Railroad, and select theological topics.

Amazon Kindle

Christmas is a special time of the year. The carols especially bring
people together. Every professional singer releases a Christmas album

old and new and meditates on the words of each carol. The emphasis
is on the baby in Bethlehem's manger, the baby who came to redeem
us from our sin. It also includes the four songs of Christmas--Mary's
Song, Zechariah's Song, the Song of the Angels, and the Song of
Simeon. These carols and meditations are part of the "To Hymn"

The Twelve Days of Christmas: A Carol Catechism
Amazon Kindle
Paperback
BookIdeas review
"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an age-old Christmas carol. But
what does it mean? Is there symbolism in the carol? Was it sung by
underground Catholics in Protestant England?
Author John L. Hoh, Jr., uses the carol as a background catechism.
Follow along as Hoh relates the carol and reviews the basic tenets of
Christian doctrine.

BookIdeas review
Some days or events or life-trials deflate us. At times like this we may
wonder why God has deserted us. But, as the poem "Footprints" so
vividly illustrates, God does remain with us and in fact carries us over
the rapids and eddies of life. Immanuel--God is with us!
A Growing Light: Advent Meditations
Amazon Kindle
Paperback
In all the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations one often
overlooks the meditation oasis known as the Advent season. Advent is
the four week pre-Christmas season of the Church year that focuses
on the coming fulfillment of Messianic prophecy as well as our own
anticipated return of our Lord for the Judgment. "Advent" means "to
come" and is appropriate as the focus is on both the Old Testament
believers looking for the coming Messiah and New Testament
believers looking for the return of the Christ. This book contains
sermons and meditations for this season as well as an explanation of
the Advent wreath and the candles within that wreath.
To Survey the Rugged Cross: A Holy Week Reflection
Amazon Kindle
Paperback
Holy Week is a pivotal point in salvation history. It starts with the joyful
acclamation of the Song of David, the Messiah, as the people
"Hosannah" our Lord riding a donkey. We observe a new command in
his body and blood. We see his excruciating and bloody death on a
cross. And, just as we give up all hope as the disciples did, he rises
victorious from the grave! Hallelujah! He has risen! He has risen indeed!
Hallelujah! These writings and sermons reflect on those crucial events
in our salvation.

BookIdeas review
If there were a press in Jesus' day, how might the events of Holy Week
be reported? What would a press report on the passion and miracles
of that fateful week? This book gives a possible glimpse to such
coverage, as well as coverage of the Christmas events and the
Ascension and Pentecost. This is the first of several books looking at
possible press coverage of Bible events.
Scriptural Handbook to "What's Going on Among the Lutherans?"
Paperback
What are the historic teachings and doctrines of the Christian faith?
Why do Christians believe Moses wrote the first five books of the
Bible? This book, a handbook with Scriptural supports of confessional
Lutheran teachings, is a complement to Patsy Leppien and Kincaid
Smith's book, "What's Going on Among the Lutherans?" and is a fine
Bible study with or without that book.
Scripture Answers its Liberal Critics: A Companion Workbook
Paperback
Liberal scholars attempt to refute the traditional and fundamental
beliefs of the Christian faith. They assert that editors compiled oral
traditions into the first five books of the Bible, that they were not
written by Moses. They deny the Virgin Birth and the Resurrection.
They dismiss prophecies, especially those that foretell the Christ, our
Savior. This companion handbook is a Bible study for the believer who
wishes to learn more about the Christian faith and to defend that faith.
Places of the Reformation
Paperback
BookIdeas review
Students of the Reformation often gloss over the names of cities and
places where Luther and his followers lived, breathed, worked, and
confessed their faith. But these cities had histories before--and after--
the Reformation. Some cities and locales leave us with impressions
and heritages today. This book is but a brief trip through several select
cities and locations of Luther and the Reformation movement.
Leaders of the Reformation
Paperback
BookIdeas review
When discussion and study of the Reformation happens the focus
often is on Rome, Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli. Rarely does anyone
focus on the ancillary players and the footnote players. But often
these very people are key, even in small ways, to enabling the great
leaders to succeed. This book looks at leaders who served Luther as
well as served with Luther. The first section looks at the Electors of
Saxony without whom Luther would not have lasted without their
protection and providence. Their faith was put to the test in allowing
Luther to teach and protecting him from papal and imperial edicts. The
section section looks at the associates of Luther who guided Luther
and aided him in the fledgling movement.
Heritage of the Lutheran Reformation
Amazon Kindle
Paperback
Now that the historical fact of the Lutheran Reformation has passed,
what is the enduring legacy and heritage of the Lutheran
Reformation? This book looks at the heritage of the Lutheran
Reformation in the areas of theology, music, education, customs, and
life.
Reflections on the Lutheran Reformation
Amazon Kindle
Paperback
Every year on October 31 Lutherans celebrate the part of their heritage
that historians mark as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in
the Western (Latin) Church. This book of essays, sermons, as well as
the 95 Thesis themselves (in English, Latin, and German) is a
composite summary of the events of that day that changed history.
An Apology of the Lutheran Faith
Paperback
There was a web site where adherents of a church wrote essays
entitled "Why I left [denomination]." One essay was called "Why I Left
Lutheranism." Of course there was a bias. This book is an apology of
the Lutheran faith and addresses errors of the author of the original
piece.
This book is an aid to those who find themselves needing to defend
the Lutheran Christian faith. It may well serve to enlighten the reader
about Christian doctrinal matters as well.
Make Disciples-Baptize Them
Paperback
Baptism has been part of the life of the Church from the very
beginning. At the Reformation questions and debates arose over the
nature and proper method of baptism. This book features essays
regarding this sacrament, both theological and fatherly, from a
Lutheran point of view. It also contains a section of frequently asked
questions (FAQs) that I have addressed over the years.
Places on the Underground Railroad: Ripley, Ohio
Amazon Kindle
Paperback
BookIdeas review
What was the "Underground Railroad?" Was it a subway? Was it a real
railroad? Who traveled on this railroad? This book explores Ripley,
Ohio, and several of her citizens. Ripley was a center of the
Underground Railroad and several citizens played leading roles as
"conductors" on the railroad.
Pioneers of Profit Among the Clouds
Amazon Kindle
Paperback
BookIdeas review
A decade after the Wright brother some pioneers along Tampa Bay
began the first scheduled airline service. It was not successful but
paved the way for future attempts. Commercialization of the airways
would begin in earnest after World War I. For one thing there was an
abundance of war surplus flying machines available, meaning aircraft
were affordable for such ventures. For another matter, manpower to
power these machines, or at least "pilot" them, was also available.
Barnstorming pilots would become all the rage in the 1920's, but
regulations on aircraft and flying meant there was more order to the
skies.
