One doesn't think of "hockey" and "Texas" in the same sentence often. Hockey is an ice sport, played when and where it is cold. Texas isn't often known as a cold weather state (although the Miami Dolphins did beat the Dallas Cowboys on an icy Thanksgiving Day game in 1993).

This book features those people that brought hockey to Texas and nurtured the sport there. It begins with the Howe family. Gordie Howe (Mr. Hockey) and two of his sons played for the World Hockey League (WHL) Houston Aeros (the Aeros name would resurface again in Houston). Because of the Howes, hockey became popular in Houston, no doubt aided by a WHL championship. Alas, success has its drawbacks. When the Aeros moved into a new arena (which today now hosts Joel Osteen's church), ticket prices went up and families stayed away. The Aeros would remain competitive but would fold a year before the WHL was folded into the NHL with just a handful of teams survining.

Norm Green and the Dallas Stars are next. The Stars won the Stanley Cup in Dallas and have become a "go-to" attraction.

Minor league teams and leagues are also featured, such as the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) which took over the Central Hockey League (CHL) lock, stock, barrel, and name. The founder of the league wrote a specific business plan for the league and how the teams were to present an entertainment experience around a hockey game, an experience any family could afford. That league is thriving today.

Hockey fans and Texas sports fans will enjoy this thorough history of the ice sport in the Lone Star State.
