Many may not realize this, but electricity is vital to the human body. The heart cannot beat without electrical impulses. The brain is triggered by electrical pulses.

Treatments have been developed for diseases using electricity. Pace makers and defibrillators use electricity to restart or regulate the heart's beating. Electro-shock therapy (EST) has been used for patients with mental disorders, but not always to their benefit.

Yes, sometimes electricity is a bad thing. Too much current (measured in amps) can kill by stopping the heart or by burning the body. And sometimes the body cannot respond to electrical stimulation. Many anorexics die because their nutritional habits deplete their electrolytes so when they go into cardiac arrest there is nothing (or too little) in the system to conduct electrical current to restart the heart.

This book explores the role of electricity in our survival and in our daily living.
